Canadian Diplomacy at the Heart of Slovakia’s Energy Sector: Ambassador Karen Elizabeth Mollica Visits VUJE
Slovakia–Canada relations in the field of nuclear energy have gained fresh momentum. We were honoured to welcome a distinguished guest to our premises: Her Excellency Karen Elizabeth Mollica, Ambassador of Canada to Slovakia, accompanied by Counsellor Mateo Barney. The visit focused on sharing expert experience, presenting cutting-edge technologies, and exploring synergies for future international cooperation.
The visit began with a comprehensive presentation of the company's scientific and production program. Andrej Žiarovský, Director for Development and International Operations at VUJE, a.s., guided the delegation through the company’s history and present day, presenting our capabilities and strong human potential.
The discussion naturally centred on one of today’s key topics, nuclear energy, along with the potential for Slovakia – Canada cooperation in this area, and the building of trust as a core value of VUJE, a.s., on which we have built our international reputation.
“Despite being on opposite sides of the Atlantic, Canada and Slovakia speak the same language when it comes to nuclear energy. Our shared commitment to safe, clean power creates a massive landscape for cooperation—from research to technical training,” confirmed Her Excellency Karen Elizabeth Mollica.
The presentation was not only about figures, but above all about a vision of safe and innovative energy that transcends national borders.
Trnava as a Centre of Excellence for Personnel Training
An important part of the programme was a visit to the Nuclear Facility Personnel Training and Education Centre in Trnava. This specialised site represents a European top-tier facility for the preparation, training and certification of nuclear power plant operators.
We began by presenting our work on the full-scope simulator of main control rooms—a practical tool that enables operators to master operational changes and critical situations without any risk to real facilities.

The visit also had a highly engaging interactive dimension. The Ambassador, Her Excellency Karen Elizabeth Mollica, was given a unique opportunity to experience the simulator first-hand. Under expert supervision Peter Drobny, she tried out procedures routinely carried out by operators, including a simulated reactor shutdown.
Peter Drobný, Director of the NPP Staff Training and Education Centre Division, described the impressions of the distinguished guest as follows: “The Ambassador was impressed by the simulator and by the opportunity to experience what it is like to work as a nuclear power plant operator. Although it is ‘only’ a training tool, the authentic experience helped the delegation understand the complexity and precision of the work performed by nuclear power plant personnel. She stated that it was one of the best visits she has undertaken as an Ambassador, which makes us proud, and we are grateful.”
These words underline the value VUJE brings not only to Slovak industry, but also to the country’s representation internationally.
A Partnership Built on Respect
The visit was not merely a protocol event, but a clear signal of willingness to cooperate. The Canadian Ambassador acknowledged the professionalism and depth of expertise of Slovak engineers and specialists. Andrej Žiarovský, Director for Development and International Operations, confirmed that Her Excellency appreciated our work and offered that, should cooperation develop in the future, she would be glad to help facilitate partner connections.
“For VUJE, this offer confirms that the path of innovation and safety the company is pursuing has global relevance. The value dimension of the visit lay above all in the recognition that nuclear safety and technological progress are a shared interest that connects countries across continents,” Andrej Žiarovský emphasised in closing, highlighting the importance of international cooperation.
