Peter Líška on TA3: Inclusion of nuclear in the green sources can reduce the pressure to shut nuclear power plants

The European Commission proposes inclusion of nuclear energy and natural gas into taxonomy and classifies them as environmentally friendly sources. The Slovak politicians, including the Prime Minister Eduard Heger, evaluate this as a fundamental and positive shift in the topic. Our nuclear energy expert Peter Líška from VUJE, a. s. spoke about the change of the EC approach and the future of nuclear power on the TA3 Television talk show "Tak Takto?!"

Peter Líška on TA3: Inclusion of nuclear in the green sources can reduce the pressure to shut nuclear power plants

Slovakia supports the European target to become carbon-neutral by 2050. "It will not be possible in our country without nuclear power. At present, 50% of electricity is produced from nuclear energy and after the completion of Unit 3 and 4 of Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant it will be more than 70%" explains Peter Líška.

It has been known for a long time that the so-called preferred sources which were defined as sustainable in the taxonomy, cannot cover the electricity supply requirements on its own. Just for comparison: The production of electricity produced by one nuclear reactor requires 75 times more area for solar photovoltaic power plants, and up to 360 times more space for wind power plants. "A nuclear reactor with an output of 900 MW will produce as much electricity as 1,400 wind turbines with an output of 3 MW, in the same period," says Peter Líška.
