VUJE completed an important stage in the process of dismantling of reactor coolant system large components in V1 NPP

When entering the European Union, the Slovak Republic undertook a commitment to decommission two shutdown units of V1 NPP in Jaslovské Bohunice. VUJE, a. s. is responsible for decommissioning the main contaminated primary circuit components including the auxiliary systems located in tens of the rooms of the V1 NPP hermetic zone. These days the fragmentation of the last of the 12 pieces of the reactor coolant pumps was completed, which together with 24 pieces of the main isolating valves and 12 loops of the main circulation pipeline formed an important part of the primary circuit of both V1 NPP units.

“Another important part of the D4.2 Project was definitely concluded which included dismantling and fragmentation of the primary circuit loops through which the cooling water flowed from the reactor up to the steam generators“, confirms Matej Zachar, leading the VUJE team of 40 people.

Two newly designed and established dry cutting workplaces – container with a wire saw and a band saw, were mostly used for fragmentation of the above-mentioned primary circuit components.

In total more than 1000 tons of metallic material was dismantled and fragmented during this stage of the project whereas the past experience has proved that a large part of the material can be released into the environment after the application of post-dismantling decontamination.

The preparatory works for the subsequent dismantling and fragmentation of the reactor coolant pump were commenced in 2018 and fragmentation of the first shell of the reactor coolant pump started after putting the dry cutting workplace at Unit 1 of V1 NPP into operation.

“A significant step of this process was putting the original V1 NPP decontamination node (DKP 4) into operation as a result of which it was possible to significantly reduce the dose rate of workers implementing the subsequent disassembly of the detachable parts of the reactor coolant pump“ explains Matej Zachar, the project manager. “In November 2020 the fragmentation of the first 6 pieces of the reactor coolant pumps was completely finalised and in September 2020 the fragmentation of the remaining 6 pieces was completed“ he concludes.

Ide o bezpečnú, efektívnu a ekonomickú likvidáciu častí odstavených blokov elektrární, ktorú riadi spoločnosť JAVYS, a.s. a spolufinancuje Európska únia prostredníctvom Európskej banky pre obnovu a rozvoj.

VUJE, a.s., na projekte pracuje v konzorciu s Westinghouse Španielsko – Westinghouse Švédsko.
